A judge ordered former NBA player Charles Oakley to pay Knicks owner James Dolan $642,337 in legal fees over destroyed texts from a 2017 Madison Square Garden incident.
A U.S. magistrate judge has ordered former NBA player Charles Oakley to pay New York Knicks owner James Dolan $642,337 in legal fees stemming from a 2017 incident at Madison Square Garden.
The ruling follows Oakley’s failed lawsuit against Dolan, which was partially revived in 2023 after a federal appeals court intervened.
The fees were awarded after Oakley failed to preserve relevant text messages from the incident, forcing Dolan’s legal team to spend over $1.3 million trying to recover them.
Though Dolan’s attorneys had sought $1.5 million, the judge reduced the amount due to inconsistencies in billing.
Oakley’s team plans to appeal, but the outcome is expected to be difficult given Dolan’s financial resources.
The case remains ongoing.
