India urges wealthy nations to cut emissions faster at COP30 prep summit, stressing equity and climate finance.
At the COP30 preparatory summit in Belem, India urged developed nations to accelerate emissions cuts, warning the global carbon budget is rapidly depleting. Ambassador Dinesh Bhatia, speaking for Prime Minister Modi, called on wealthier nations—historically responsible for most emissions—to reach net zero sooner and move toward net-negative emissions. India highlighted its 36% reduction in emission intensity since 2005, over 50% non-fossil power capacity, and meeting its revised climate target five years early. It also joined Brazil’s Tropical Forests Forever Facility as an Observer and reiterated the need for equitable, predictable, and concessional climate finance, technology transfer, and capacity building for developing countries, reaffirming support for the Paris Agreement and multilateral climate cooperation.
