Garrett Huff named Santa Barbara County Fire Chief, succeeding Mark Hartwig, effective December 8.
Garrett Huff has been selected as Santa Barbara County’s next Fire Chief, succeeding retiring Chief Mark Hartwig, with the appointment set to take effect December 8 after Board of Supervisors approval on November 18.
Huff, a 20-year department veteran since 2005 and firefighter since 1999, currently serves as Deputy Chief overseeing emergency medical services and fire communications.
He has led responses to major incidents including wildfires, the Montecito debris flow, the Conception boat tragedy, and the pandemic.
A graduate of Kaplan University and Oxnard College, Huff holds multiple certifications and is completing a Master’s in Public Administration.
He will lead 320 employees, 16 stations, and a $130 million budget across 2,480 square miles serving about 172,000 residents in unincorporated areas and cities like Goleta and Solvang.
County Executive Officer Mona Miyasato cited his leadership and deep institutional knowledge.
