A federal judge declared a mistrial in the $25 million crypto heist case against MIT-educated brothers who exploited Ethereum’s flaws.
A federal judge in Manhattan declared a mistrial in the case of MIT-educated brothers Anton and James Peraire-Bueno, accused of orchestrating a $25 million cryptocurrency heist in 12 seconds by exploiting a vulnerability in the Ethereum blockchain.
The jury could not reach a unanimous verdict on charges of wire fraud and money laundering.
Prosecutors alleged the brothers used deceptive trading tactics through a tool called MEV-boost to manipulate automated bots, while defense attorneys argued the strategy was a legitimate high-speed market practice.
The trial, which lasted four weeks, ended after jurors reported emotional distress and struggled with legal definitions.
The Justice Department has not yet decided whether to retry the case.
