Cornell settles for $60M to regain $250M in federal research funds after DEI and antisemitism allegations.
Cornell University has agreed to a $60 million settlement with the Trump administration to restore $250 million in withheld federal research funding, following allegations of civil rights violations related to diversity, equity, and inclusion policies and responses to antisemitism.
The agreement, which requires $30 million in fines and $30 million for U.S. agriculture research, mandates compliance with federal civil rights standards, including annual admissions data reporting through 2028, campus climate surveys on antisemitism, and the cessation of DEI initiatives.
Although the Education Department did not find conclusive evidence of violations, Cornell accepted the terms to reinstate funding, preserve academic freedom, and maintain federal research partnerships.
The settlement marks the fifth such agreement with an elite university, following Columbia’s $200 million deal.
