Belize launches $190K sargassum forecasting tool using satellites and models to improve coastal warnings and planning.
Belize has launched a $190,000 Sargassum Forecasting Tool using satellite data and ocean models to predict sargassum movement along its coast, improving early warnings for the national Sargassum Task Force.
Developed by the Department of Environment with support from Taiwan’s SICA AZUL project and the Central American Commission for Environment and Development, the system helps track mat size, volume, and arrival times, aiding tourism and coastal planning.
Though current sargassum levels are low, officials warn of earlier arrivals—potentially as early as January—due to shifting patterns.
The tool, part of a broader initiative with 80% focused on sargassum and 20% on plastic pollution, strengthens Belize’s regional leadership in environmental response.
