A 19-year-old international student, Febrio De-Zoysa, has pleaded guilty to six counts of murder in connection with a March 2024 mass stabbing in Ottawa that killed a Sri Lankan family of five and their friend.
The attack, which occurred in a Barrhaven townhouse, resulted in the deaths of mother Darshani Ekanayake, her four young children, and family friend Gamini Amarakoon.
De-Zoysa, who was living in the home, admitted to four counts of first-degree murder, two counts of second-degree murder, and one count of attempted murder.
He faces a life sentence without parole for 25 years.
The victims, except the youngest child, were recent immigrants to Canada.
The case, described as one of Ottawa’s worst mass killings, prompted national grief and emotional impact statements from surviving family members.
A trial was avoided following the guilty plea.
