Woodrow Lowe, a three-time All-American linebacker for Alabama and NFL veteran with the San Diego Chargers, has died at 71 after a prolonged illness.
He played for Alabama from 1972 to 1975 under Bear Bryant, helping win a co-national championship in 1973 and setting a school record with 134 tackles in a season.
Lowe finished with 315 career tackles, fourth in Alabama history, and recorded six interceptions.
Selected in the 1976 NFL Draft, he played 11 seasons with the Chargers, appearing in 168 games, recording 21 interceptions, four of which were returned for touchdowns, and earning a Pro Bowl nod in 1981.
He was named to the Chargers’ 40th and 50th anniversary all-time teams and helped the team reach the AFC Championship Game in 1980 and 1981.
Lowe was inducted into the College Football and Alabama Sports Halls of Fame.
His younger brother, Eddie Lowe, mayor of Phenix City, confirmed the passing.
