Walter Alcivar, a dual Ecuadorian-Canadian citizen, was arrested at Sydney Airport in September 2024 for smuggling 5.5 kg of cocaine and faces life in prison.
A 42-year-old dual Ecuadorian-Canadian citizen, Walter Alcivar, was arrested at Sydney Airport in September 2024 after border officials found a 5.5-kilogram package of cocaine strapped to his groin.
The package, containing over 2.5 kilograms of pure cocaine in liquid-filled condoms and powdered form, was secured with a beige strap and electrical tape.
Alcivar, who had passed through Madrid undetected, pleaded guilty to importing a commercial quantity of a prohibited drug.
Court documents show he claimed ignorance, stating the package was not his, and cited threats to his family from a Mexican number, including warnings about harm if he continued.
He had taken out a loan shortly before traveling, which was repaid days later, and had previously texted someone referred to as “amor” about collecting money at month’s end.
Alcivar faces a maximum penalty of life imprisonment and is scheduled to appear in Downing Centre District Court on November 17, 2025.
