Two RCMP officers won’t face charges after shooting 15-year-old Hoss Lightning, a Samson Cree teen, in 2024.
Alberta’s police watchdog, ASIRT, has found no criminal charges will be filed against two RCMP officers who shot and killed 15-year-old Hoss Lightning in Wetaskiwin on August 30, 2024.
The teen, a member of the Samson Cree Nation, was shot after officers believed he was reaching for a firearm in his backpack, though no weapon was found.
Surveillance footage showed he had previously handed over a machete and knife and was acting in distress, with a cognitive delay equivalent to a nine-year-old.
Officers claimed they feared for their lives, and the report concluded their use of force was legally justified under the Criminal Code.
The decision has sparked outcry from Indigenous advocacy groups, who continue to demand systemic reform and a national inquiry into police use of force involving Indigenous people.
