Thorr Bjorn, former URI athletic director and UMass football alum (1987–1990), has been hired as UMass’ senior deputy athletic director and chief administrative officer, effective December 1, focusing on the football program.
He joins after recently accepting a promotion at URI, citing athletic director Ryan Bamford’s vision—particularly the move to the Mid-American Conference—as a key factor.
Bamford, who previously managed all athletics operations, said he needed a dedicated leader to handle day-to-day football duties while he focuses on external priorities.
Bjorn’s five-year, $395,000 annual contract fills a role left vacant since June.
Despite UMass football’s 0–9 start in 2025, both Bamford and Bjorn expressed confidence in the program’s future, citing ongoing stadium upgrades and structural changes as signs of progress.
