Steven Deer, 62, charged with 21 fraud counts for allegedly stealing thousands by falsifying invoices at Victoria’s CFMEU training unit.
Steven Deer, 62, former head of CFMEU Victoria’s training division, has been charged with 21 fraud-related offences by Taskforce Hawk, a police unit probing corruption in Australia’s construction industry.
He faces allegations of falsifying invoices from June 2024 to May 2025, allegedly stealing thousands from the union’s training unit at the Port of Melbourne.
Police executed a search warrant at his home and charged him with seven counts each of making false documents and obtaining property by deception.
Deer was suspended in September and dismissed in October following whistleblower claims, though he has denied wrongdoing.
The case is separate from other Taskforce Hawk actions involving arson and extortion.
The union’s training facility, funded by state grants and a $1.3 billion redundancy fund, has drawn scrutiny over a $27 million project now valued at $8 million, including high-end amenities.
Deer has been granted bail and is due in court on January 22, 2026.
