Perth man sentenced to 7 years for stealing $2.7M in flood recovery funds meant for Warmun community.
Craig Robert Dale, a Perth man, was sentenced to seven years in prison for fraudulently obtaining and gambling away $2.7 million in community funds meant for rebuilding Warmun, a remote Aboriginal community in Western Australia after floods and a fire.
The money, intended for infrastructure and staff housing, was diverted into Dale’s personal account and lost to gambling.
Judge David MacLean condemned the theft as a betrayal of a traumatized community, noting it prevented the opening of a much-needed aged care facility.
The sentence, backdated to September 2023, followed an investigation linked to former bureaucrat Paul Whyte, who was jailed for a larger fraud.
Community members expressed relief, citing lasting financial and emotional harm.
