Ontario is behind on building long-term care beds but aims to meet its 2028 target despite aging population pressures.
Ontario is significantly behind its 2028 goal of adding 58,000 long-term care beds, with only about 6,700 built and 18,000 in progress, according to its fall fiscal update.
Despite the shortfall, the province says it will meet its target, citing increased investments since 2021 and the launch of a permanent capital funding program praised as a “game changer” for easing construction barriers.
However, a report warns bed availability per senior will decline due to rapid population aging.
The province also plans over $1 billion in home care funding to help seniors stay independent.
