Newcastle’s exhibition center is redeveloped into 192 homes, including affordable units, amid state-backed housing efforts.
The Newcastle Exhibition and Convention Centre, owned by West Leagues Club, is being redeveloped into a mixed-use project with 192 new homes, including 10% affordable housing for 15 years, and ground-floor commercial space.
The project, declared state significant by NSW authorities, spans three lots from King Street to Union Street and is part of a broader regional trend, with 12 residential developments in the Hunter region receiving the same status this year, potentially delivering nearly 3,000 homes.
The designation accelerates planning, requiring projects to begin planning within nine months and start construction within two years.
Similar conversions are underway at other entertainment venues, including three pubs being transformed into over 750 dwellings.
Officials say the move helps address housing shortages and rental pressures, offering more options for local families and essential workers.
