A new report reveals deep-rooted anti-Black racism in London’s Metropolitan Police, calling it systemic and persistent despite past warnings.
A 126-page report has found systemic anti-Black racism is deeply embedded in London’s Metropolitan Police, describing it as “baked” into the force’s culture, leadership, and systems.
Commissioned by the Met and led by human resources expert Shereen Daniels, the review draws on over 40 years of evidence showing Black officers and staff face disproportionate scrutiny, with darker-skinned individuals more likely to be labeled confrontational.
The findings echo past reports, including the 1999 MacPherson inquiry that labeled the force “institutionally racist” after the Stephen Lawrence case.
Despite repeated warnings, critics say meaningful change has not followed.
Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley acknowledged the report’s severity and reaffirmed the Met’s commitment to structural reforms through initiatives like the London Race Action Plan.
Baroness Doreen Lawrence, Stephen Lawrence’s mother, said the truth has long been known, stressing that real change must now follow.
