Mesa County proposes 6.2% sheriff’s office cut, risking 18–28 deputy jobs and public safety.
Mesa County’s proposed 2026 budget includes a 6.2% cut to the Sheriff’s Office, potentially eliminating 18 to 28 deputy positions, according to Sheriff Todd Rowell, who warns the reduction could harm public safety and community services.
Rowell argues the county is underfunding law enforcement by relying on Public Safety Sales Tax revenue meant to supplement, not replace, general fund support.
While Commissioner Cody Davis says the cuts mainly affect unfilled roles and current deputies would keep their jobs, Rowell maintains the proposed budget could undermine staffing goals set by voters in 2017.
The final budget is set for approval on December 9.
