Kongsberg’s $850M missile project launches in Newcastle, creating jobs and training locals ahead of 2027 production.
Honeysuckle in Newcastle has become a temporary hub for Kongsberg Defence Australia’s $850 million missile project, supporting engineering and training ahead of a 2027 factory opening at Williamtown.
The facility will produce Naval and Joint Strike Missiles for Australia’s navy and air force, with production starting in 2027.
The first local team is already working, and a cohort will train in Norway.
Minister Pat Conroy emphasized the project’s high-tech nature, dismissed safety concerns due to proximity to an air force base, and confirmed explosive warheads won’t be assembled on-site.
The initiative, part of Australia’s defence industrial strategy, aims to create over 100 jobs, engage 20 local suppliers, and build resilience for crisis response or export.
The office launch coincided with the first anniversary of the national defence plan and included Norway’s ambassador.
