flag Irish citizens are sharing photos of rare 2024 Northern Lights to help scientists study space weather.

Dr. Alexandra Ruth Fogg of DIAS is leading a citizen science project inviting Irish residents, especially in Louth, Meath, Westmeath, and Wexford, to submit photos of the Northern Lights taken during intense geomagnetic storms in May and October 2024. These rare auroral displays, among the strongest of the 21st century, were visible across Ireland and widely captured on phones and cameras. The collected images will help researchers map aurora characteristics and improve understanding of space weather, a natural hazard, supporting national preparedness efforts.
