India's Supreme Court says pilot error not proven in June 2025 Air India crash, orders probe into investigation's fairness.
The Supreme Court of India has stated that no evidence from official reports implicates the pilot in the June 12, 2025, Air India Boeing 787 crash near Ahmedabad, which killed over 250 people.
A bench led by Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi rejected media speculation and dismissed claims of pilot error, emphasizing that the preliminary investigation does not assign blame.
The court acknowledged a petition by the pilot’s father and the Federation of Indian Pilots seeking an independent judicial probe, citing concerns over the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau’s independence and potential oversight of technical factors.
It directed the Centre and DGCA to respond and scheduled further hearings, affirming that the investigation’s goal is prevention, not punishment.
The case will be heard alongside a similar petition from the NGO Safety Matters.
