India may face 11 million tonnes of solar waste by 2047; recycling could cut emissions and boost materials supply.
India could generate up to 11 million tonnes of solar waste by 2047, mainly from decommissioned panels, according to CEEW studies.
Recycling this waste could create a ₹3,700 crore market, meet 38% of solar manufacturing material needs, and prevent 37 million tonnes of carbon emissions.
Currently, recycling is unprofitable due to high panel acquisition costs, with recyclers losing ₹10,000–12,000 per tonne.
The report recommends lowering panel prices, implementing Extended Producer Responsibility, tax incentives, and better design standards to build a circular solar economy.
