An ICE officer in Houston was severely injured on November 3, 2025, during an arrest when Walter Leonel Perez Rodriguez, a 33-year-old Salvadoran national with a history of child sexual assault, DUIs, and prior deportations, attacked him with a metal coffee cup, causing a deep facial laceration and burns requiring 13 stitches.
Perez, who had reentered the U.S. illegally, is now in custody and faces charges of illegal reentry and assaulting a federal officer.
The incident is part of a broader surge in threats and violence against ICE agents, with DHS reporting an 8,000% increase in death threats by October, including online harassment and violent rhetoric targeting agents’ families.
Federal officials have warned of escalating domestic extremist activity, including a deadly rooftop attack on an ICE facility in Dallas and a TikTok post offering money for the murder of agents.
DHS has launched a tip line to report threats and emphasized that assaults on federal officers will be prosecuted.
