Damien Richardson convicted for Nazi-like gesture at Melbourne restaurant, but not for endorsing Nazism.
Former Neighbours actor Damien Richardson, 56, was found guilty of making a gesture resembling a Nazi salute during a speech at a closed Melbourne restaurant in September 2024.
The court ruled the licensed premises was a public place despite being private, and video evidence showed the gesture, which resembled a Nazi salute.
Magistrate Justin Foster acknowledged the act was likely to be mistaken for one but concluded Richardson did not endorse Nazism, citing his criticism of media portrayals, mockery of the perception, emphasis on his grandfather’s service against Nazis, and condemnation of anti-Semitism.
The verdict does not find intent to support Nazi ideology.
A pre-sentence hearing is set for December 4.
