Cork woman sentenced to 2.5 years for harassing surgeon with false abuse claims.
A Cork woman, Ethel Noonan, 45, was sentenced to two and a half years in prison for a sustained campaign of harassment against a consultant surgeon from 2017 to 2020.
She sent numerous false and damaging emails accusing the doctor of serious crimes, including female genital mutilation and child sexual abuse, following dissatisfaction with a 2015 medical procedure.
The Medical Council had previously dismissed her complaints.
The victim, a surgeon with 35 years of practice, said the harassment caused severe emotional distress and led to early retirement.
Noonan, who represented herself, failed to provide mitigating evidence.
Judge Patricia Ryan imposed a four-year sentence with 18 months suspended for five years and ordered a ten-year ban on contact with the victim.
