A British Columbia couple, Russell Porisky and Elaine Gould, have lost their appeal against a $1.4 million tax assessment linked to their anti-tax seminars through the defunct Paradigm Education Group.
The Federal Court of Appeal upheld a prior ruling that their activities generated taxable income, rejecting their claim that the Income Tax Act did not apply.
The court dismissed their pseudolegal arguments, including the false notion of a "duality" between natural and artificial persons and the idea that income tax constitutes slavery.
Both were previously convicted of tax evasion, with Porisky receiving a five-and-a-half-year prison sentence and a $239,000 fine, and Gould sentenced to six months in prison and fined over $38,000.
Several associates were also convicted for similar schemes.
The Canada Revenue Agency continues to classify such activities as tax protest and emphasizes that individuals must comply with tax laws regardless of personal beliefs.
