Cal State Channel Islands math lecturer Jonathan Caravello pleads not guilty to throwing a tear gas canister at Border Patrol agents during a July 2025 protest.
Jonathan Caravello, a Cal State Channel Islands math lecturer, has pleaded not guilty to federal charges of assaulting immigration agents by allegedly throwing a tear gas canister during a July 10 protest at a cannabis facility in Camarillo.
The incident occurred amid large-scale immigration raids that led to hundreds of farmworkers being detained, including one who died during a confrontation.
Prosecutors say Caravello retrieved and hurled a canister at U.S. Border Patrol agents, but witnesses and his defense dispute this, claiming he acted to protect a wheelchair-bound protester.
The case, which centers on conflicting accounts of the event, is set for trial in March 2026.
Caravello’s supporters, including the California Faculty Association, affirm his right to peaceful protest.
The Department of Justice and CSU Channel Islands have not commented.
If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in prison.
