A Belfast woman falsely claimed to donate a kidney to a sick man, deceiving his family for months, and was jailed for five months.
Nicola Hutton, 54, of Belfast, was jailed for five months for falsely claiming she would donate a kidney to Billy Cullen, a man with end-stage kidney disease, after he and his wife publicly appealed for a donor.
Hutton, who used the name Nicola Carlisle, deceived the family for six months, sending false texts about medical appointments and transplant approval, meeting them, and accepting a gift.
Hospital staff confirmed she was never registered as a donor.
The judge called her actions “abject wickedness,” an exploitation of the family’s despair that caused prolonged emotional distress and wasted critical time, though a legitimate donor was eventually found.
