Australia’s anti-corruption chief faces scrutiny over conflicts linked to his military and defence ties, prompting calls to recuse himself.
Australia’s National Anti-Corruption Commission head Paul Brereton faces scrutiny over two unresolved complaints about conflicts of interest tied to his past military role and ongoing defence ties.
Despite proper conflict declarations, he has been advised to recuse himself from all defence-related matters due to concerns over public perception and distractions.
The commission’s watchdog reported 75 complaints in 2024/25—up from 50—many about decisions not to investigate referrals, with four concerning Brereton, one resolved and one dismissed, two still under review.
Defence referrals make up only three percent of cases, which can be handled by deputy commissioners.
Independent senator David Pocock has urged Brereton to step aside.
As of November 5, the commission was managing 38 active investigations, 32 preliminary inquiries, 11 joint probes, and three cases in court.
