A 16-year-old Bahamian student, Madeline Thompson, died after falling from the 27th floor of a Panama City hotel during a school trip for the FIRST Global Robotics Challenge on October 31, 2025.
The incident, which occurred while she was staying with two classmates, was ruled accidental by Panamanian authorities after reviewing surveillance and interviewing students.
Thompson, a volunteer at St Joseph’s Parish Soup Kitchen and representative of St Augustine’s College, was honored by her teammates, who continued the competition and achieved the Bahamas’ best-ever ranking—71st out of 181 countries.
