Two men, including an Algerian man, were wrongly released from UK prison due to systemic failures, sparking calls for urgent reform.
A 24-year-old Algerian man, Brahim Kaddour-Cherif, was mistakenly released from HMP Wandsworth on October 29, 2025, after serving part of a sentence for trespass and indecent exposure, and was only reported to police on November 4.
The error, linked to systemic failures in the prison system, delayed accurate information to ministers, including Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy, who was not fully briefed on Kaddour-Cherif’s deportation status.
A separate inmate, Billy Smith, 35, was also accidentally released and is now being sought by Surrey Police.
The incidents have drawn criticism from justice officials, including Commons justice committee chair Andy Slaughter, who warned of a strained system requiring urgent reform.
