UK’s Ajax vehicles achieve initial operational status after delays, replacing old models with advanced, UK-made armoured vehicles.
The UK’s £6.3 billion Ajax armoured vehicle programme has achieved initial operating capability, marking a major milestone after years of delays and technical issues, including noise and vibration problems that injured soldiers during testing.
More than 165 vehicles have been delivered, with a full squadron now operational, replacing aging CVR(T) models.
Developed by General Dynamics in Merthyr Tydfil, the six variants are the first new armoured fighting vehicles for the British Army in nearly 30 years.
Defence Minister Luke Pollard confirmed the vehicles are safe and effective, calling them the world’s most advanced medium-weight armoured fighting vehicle.
Full operating capability is expected in about four years, as the government emphasizes modernizing the armed forces amid rising global threats and improving defence procurement efficiency and support for UK-based defence companies.
