UK to overhaul school music curriculum, ending English Baccalaureate’s music requirement, aiming to boost access and diversity in arts education.
Ed Sheeran has welcomed the UK government’s proposed overhaul of the school music curriculum, calling it a long-overdue step to reverse a 21% decline in music provision since 2010.
The reforms, based on a review by Professor Becky Francis, will scrap the English Baccalaureate’s performance measure, diversify taught music genres, and improve access—especially in disadvantaged schools where 61% had no GCSE music entries in 2024/25.
Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson emphasized that arts education should be accessible to all, not just a few, and the updated curriculum will be published in 2027, with changes implemented in 2028 and GCSEs revised for first teaching in 2029.
