Tony Mokbel, 60, freed after serving time for 2006–07 meth trafficking due to legal misconduct by his former lawyer, who was also a police informer.
Tony Mokbel, 60, will not serve additional prison time for trafficking 41kg of methamphetamine in 2006–2007, after the Victorian Court of Appeal upheld his conviction but re-sentenced him to 13 years, seven months, and 15 days—time already served.
The court acknowledged a substantial miscarriage of justice due to barrister Nicola Gobbo’s dual role as Mokbel’s lawyer and a police informer, leading to the quashing of two other convictions.
His Orbital importation conviction was overturned, with a retrial ordered.
The Victorian Director of Public Prosecutions is reviewing whether to pursue the case, with no decision yet announced.
Mokbel remains on bail and is due back in court on November 17.
