An 18th-century defensive tower, complete with rare machicolation, was discovered during restoration at Old Willis’s Magazine in Gibraltar.
Restoration work at Old Willis’s Magazine in Gibraltar has uncovered a previously unknown 18th-century defensive tower, part of the site’s southern defenses.
Identified using historical maps, WWII plans, and a 19th-century photograph, the tower served as a watchtower and was linked to a water well by a fortified corridor.
Archaeologists found its foundations and a rare machicolation, the first of its kind in Gibraltar, indicating active fortification rather than passive storage.
The discovery, made by Wright Tech Ltd and restoration specialist Manuel Jaén, redefines the site’s historical role and has been shared with the Gibraltar National Museum.
