Queensland cancels new youth mental health hub, opting for leased spaces amid criticism.
The Queensland government has canceled plans for a new child and youth mental health hub in Yeronga, nearly eight years after the project was first announced.
Instead, it will lease space at two existing sites—Upper Mount Gravatt and Taringa—to provide 20 patient rooms, costing $4.4 million for setup and $600,000 in first-year leasing fees.
Labor MP Mark Bailey criticized the move as secretive and a broken promise, warning families will face longer travel times for care.
The decision follows a history of contentious changes to youth mental health services, including the 2014 closure of the Barrett Adolescent Centre, which preceded several youth deaths.
