On November 3, 2025, crews from nine agencies, including Greenways Land Trust and Canada’s Department of Fisheries and Oceans, removed 11 massive industrial tires—each weighing about four tonnes and likely filled with Styrofoam—from a beach near Campbell River, British Columbia.
The tires, posing environmental risks due to potential microplastic pollution, were hauled off by tugboat and truck after being chained together, as no vehicles could access the site.
Nearly 30 volunteers had previously helped clear smaller Styrofoam debris.
DFO could not identify the tires’ owner and declined further comment, noting its investigation continues.
The groups are forming a task force to prepare for future marine debris incidents.
