New Zealand will offer free cervical screening to all ages 25–69 starting Oct 2027, part of its Medicard plan to eliminate cervical cancer by 2030.
Labour plans to make cervical screening free for all New Zealanders aged 25 to 69 starting October 2027 through its Medicard health initiative, expanding access beyond current eligibility.
The move, costing $21.6 million in its first year and funded from existing health resources, aims to boost early detection and help eliminate cervical cancer by 2030.
Currently, about half of eligible women pay for screening, but the policy will remove financial barriers, including through self-testing options.
The Medicard also includes three free GP visits annually, funded by a proposed capital gains tax on property profits, though details on the tax’s implementation remain pending.
