Jammu and Kashmir's MMU opposes mandatory Vande Mataram singing in schools, calling it un-Islamic and a Hindutva push.
The Mutahida Majlis-e-Ulema (MMU), a Jammu and Kashmir Muslim religious coalition, has urged the union territory government to withdraw a directive requiring schools to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram on November 7, calling the mandate coercive and un-Islamic.
The MMU, led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, stated that singing the song conflicts with the Islamic principle of Tawheed, or the absolute oneness of Allah, and violates religious freedom.
It criticized the order as promoting a Hindutva agenda under the guise of cultural celebration, urging officials to allow patriotism to be expressed through service rather than forced participation.
The directive follows a Union Cabinet approval for nationwide observance, with Prime Minister Modi set to attend a major event in New Delhi.
La MMU de Jammu y Cachemira se opone a la obligatoriedad de cantar Vande Mataram en las escuelas, calificándolo de no islámico y un impulso de Hindutva.
