Jamie Moonen sentenced to 13 months for threatening Dublin councillor Malachy Steenson in 2024.
Jamie Moonen, 30, of Dublin 1, was sentenced to 13 months in prison for threatening to kill city councillor Malachy Steenson on May 15, 2024.
Police responded after Moonen approached a patrol car on the North Circular Road, verbally abused an officer, and declared his intent to kill Steenson, who was campaigning.
Officers found Moonen at Steenson’s office, where he repeated the threats and became aggressive toward the councillor’s relatives.
Moonen admitted to the threats, citing alcohol, anger over political posters, and depression, and apologized.
With 12 prior public order convictions and one assault conviction, Judge Martin Nolan reduced an initial three-year sentence to 13 months, citing remorse, cooperation, and personal struggles.
Steenson, who has faced prior threats and increased security, asked for leniency, hoping Moonen would learn from the incident.
