Israeli-Russian woman details torture by Kataib Hezbollah in Iraq, released after U.S.-led diplomacy.
Elizabeth Tsurkov, a 38-year-old Israeli-Russian dual citizen, has spoken publicly about enduring severe abuse during nearly two and a half years in captivity by the Iran-backed militia Kataib Hezbollah in Iraq.
She described being tortured, electrocuted, beaten, and sexually assaulted while held in isolation, with her captors threatening her life and forcing false confessions.
Tsurkov, who was researching Shiite movements in Iraq, said she believed her abduction followed an unkept meeting in Baghdad.
She was released in September 2025 after U.S.-led diplomatic efforts, credited with saving her life.
Tsurkov has since filed a legal notice accusing Israeli media of spreading false reports that damaged her safety and release efforts, demanding a public apology and symbolic compensation.
Her testimony highlights the extreme conditions faced by hostages held by foreign-backed militias and underscores regional instability.
