A 2025 inquest ruled German backpacker Simone Strobel likely murdered with a sexual motive in 2005, despite no signs of assault, and her case remains unsolved.
A second coronial inquest in 2025 concluded that German backpacker Simone Strobel, who vanished in 2005 in New South Wales, was likely killed by someone with a sexual motive, despite her body being found naked with no signs of sexual assault.
The inquest, led by Magistrate Teresa O’Sullivan, found it probable her clothes were removed for sexual reasons and ruled her death a homicide by an unknown person or persons.
While her then-boyfriend, Tobias Moran, was charged in 2022 and later compensated $190,000 after charges were dropped, the coroner stated it was unlikely he acted alone or was involved.
The case has been referred to NSW Homicide Squad’s unsolved crimes unit, with recommendations to retest male DNA found on Strobel’s clothing and further analyze other evidence.
The family continues to seek answers after two decades.
