Indianapolis starts $20K cash program for high-risk pregnant women to cut infant mortality.
Indianapolis has launched the BIRTH Fund, providing up to $20,000 in unconditional cash support over three years to pregnant women and new mothers in high-risk ZIP codes with elevated infant mortality rates.
Eligible participants, aged 18 or older with incomes at or below $39,000, receive $1,125 at the start of pregnancy and monthly payments of $750 for 15 months postpartum, then $375 for the next 21 months.
The program, modeled on the national Bridge Project, aims to reduce disparities in maternal and infant health by addressing systemic issues like poverty and racism.
Participants also receive support from community health workers who connect them to prenatal care, doulas, insurance, childcare, and safe sleep education.
Funded by private donors and evaluated by the Regenstrief Institute, the initiative targets neighborhoods where infant mortality—especially among Black infants—is significantly higher than the national average.
