China’s Tianwen-1 captured close-up images of interstellar object 3I/ATLAS, marking a major milestone in space exploration.
China's Tianwen-1 Mars orbiter captured high-resolution images of the interstellar object 3I/ATLAS from about 30 million kilometers away, marking one of the closest spacecraft observations of the object.
The China National Space Administration confirmed the orbiter detected clear cometary features, with images used to create an animation of its motion.
Discovered in July 2025, 3I/ATLAS is the third known interstellar visitor to the solar system, likely originating near the Milky Way’s center and estimated to be 3 to 11 billion years old.
The successful observation marks a key achievement in Tianwen-1’s extended mission and serves as a technical milestone for China’s upcoming Tianwen-2 mission, which aims to collect asteroid samples and study a main-belt comet.
