Brazilian nationals arrested in Guyana for illegal gold mining in protected rainforest.
Brazilian nationals were arrested in Guyana’s Iwokrama Protected Area, a UNESCO-recognized rainforest reserve, for illegal gold mining disguised as tourism.
Flaviano Teixiera-Costa was taken into custody on November 1, 2025, alongside Jose Do Santos Silvino, arrested earlier on October 8, during a joint operation by Guyana’s Geology and Mines Commission, police, and Iwokrama Rangers.
Several other suspected miners fled, leaving behind passports.
Authorities say rising gold prices fuel illicit activity, which threatens ecosystems, pollutes rivers, and undermines conservation and climate goals.
Iwokrama reiterated its commitment to enforcing the 1996 Act, which bans mining in the area, and pledged to publish names and images of offenders.
