BJP MP claims India's anthem honored a British official, sparking backlash; Congress calls claim false and historically inaccurate.
BJP MP Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri sparked a political firestorm in India on November 6, 2025, claiming the national anthem Jana Gana Mana was composed to welcome a British official, a statement swiftly rejected by Congress leader Priyank Kharge as baseless and historically inaccurate.
Kharge emphasized that Rabindranath Tagore wrote the anthem in 1911 as a tribute to India’s destiny, not the British monarchy, and that it was first performed at the Indian National Congress in Calcutta.
The remarks emerged ahead of the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram, being commemorated nationwide with a major event in New Delhi attended by Prime Minister Modi.
El diputado del BJP afirma que el himno de la India honró a un funcionario británico, lo que provocó una reacción violenta; el Congreso califica la afirmación de falsa e históricamente inexacta.
