Air New Zealand has launched a four-month trial of the BETA ALIA CX300, its first electric aircraft, beginning flights from Tauranga to Hamilton on October 17, 2025.
Pilots Andrew Mercer and James Owen will operate the zero-emission aircraft on domestic routes including Taupō, Napier, and Palmerston North, with planned Cook Strait crossings to Blenheim by January 2026.
The programme, in partnership with the Civil Aviation Authority and BETA, aims to assess performance, safety, and integration into New Zealand’s airspace, supporting future sustainable aviation.
The aircraft can fly up to 398 km with two crew and 5.6 cubic meters of cargo, recharging via mobile 65kW chargers funded by Air New Zealand’s Climate and Nature Fund.
