Volkswagen is making its first self-driving chip in China with Horizon Robotics for use in 2026 Chinese models.
Volkswagen is developing its first in-house autonomous driving chip in China through a joint venture with Horizon Robotics, targeting Level 3 and higher self-driving capabilities.
The chip, expected in three to five years, will deliver 500 to 700 TOPS of computing power and be tailored for Chinese road conditions.
The move, part of Volkswagen’s “In China, for China” strategy, aims to boost competitiveness amid declining sales and rising pressure from domestic EV makers like BYD and Nio.
The technology will debut in 2026 models sold in China, with no confirmation on global use.
