U.S. and South Korea strengthen defense ties amid North Korea’s artillery tests, with Seoul boosting spending and cooperating on ship repairs.
U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth praised South Korea’s plan to increase defense spending by 8.2% for 2026, calling it a key step in strengthening the U.S.-South Korea alliance and enhancing Seoul’s ability to defend itself against North Korea.
During talks in Seoul with Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back, Hegseth highlighted cooperation on using South Korea’s shipbuilding capabilities to maintain and repair U.S. warships, improving readiness for regional crises.
While reaffirming the alliance’s focus on deterring North Korea, Hegseth noted the need for flexibility in addressing broader regional challenges.
South Korea reiterated its commitment to the nuclear non-proliferation treaty, denying any plans to develop nuclear weapons or seek the return of U.S. tactical nuclear weapons.
No joint statement was released, though Hegseth said there were no substantive differences.
The visit followed North Korea’s test-firing of about 10 artillery rounds into its western waters.
