Sofyan Boalag, 46, a man serving an indeterminate sentence for 13 crimes including sexual assault with a weapon stemming from 2012 attacks in St. John’s, Newfoundland, died in federal custody on Saturday at the Bath Institution in Ontario. Correctional Service Canada confirmed his death but withheld the cause due to privacy laws. Boalag was convicted in 2016 after a public warning was issued about an offender targeting women at night. In January 2025, he filed a lawsuit claiming he was stabbed by another inmate in 2023, alleging permanent injury, though the federal government said he provoked the attack. A quality-of-care review and coroner’s investigation are underway. His lawyer and a family member said they had no information about his passing.
