Shell launches SMSS, a 24/7 oil-monitoring system to prevent ship failures by detecting contamination and degradation in real time.
Shell Marine has launched the Shell Marine Sensor Service (SMSS), a 24/7 onboard monitoring system that uses a plug-and-play sensor and display to track oil condition in real time, detecting issues like water contamination and degradation.
Designed to act as a "digital deckhand," SMSS alerts crews to potential problems early, helping prevent equipment failure—the top cause of shipping incidents in 2024.
The system works offline and shares data with Shell’s shore-based experts, who provide tailored maintenance advice using extensive maritime experience and a large lubricant database.
SMSS complements periodic oil analysis, supports condition-based maintenance across all engine types, and helps extend oil drain intervals, reduce costs, and improve vessel reliability.
Available to all vessels, it expands Shell’s oil monitoring suite, which includes Shell LubeAnalyst and Shell LubeMonitor.
Shell lanza SMSS, un sistema de monitoreo del petróleo las 24 horas del día, los 7 días de la semana, para prevenir las fallas de los buques mediante la detección de la contaminación y la degradación en tiempo real.
